To get by she must make the most important phone call of her life / Ratings=8 of 10 / duration=17 min. La croyance dans l'autre = la croyance chez les Filles. This was an excellent, very well made exciting short film, which makes you sit on the edge of your seat. The dialogues and the performances were all convincing and the ending was cathartic. But unfortunately this movie is kind of a copy paste of a great danish movie called "The Guilty. If that movie didn't exist I would give this one a 10/10 rating, but the plot is so similar to "The Guilty" that it couldn't surprise me despite it's great presentation. Still I think this is the best of the Oscar nominated live action short films this year this year (I haven't seen SARIA yet.

"Une soeur" or "A Sister" is a Belgian French-language live action short film that premiered back in 2018 and was nominated at the 2020 Academy Awards almost 1.5 years later. The director is Delphine Girard, apparently still a relatively young filmmaker, and her effort here makes me curious about what we can expect from her once she makes the transition to full feature films. I got to watch all the five nominated live action short films last night before the Oscar ceremony and this one here was the first they showed and also my favorite from the bunch. At approximately 17 minutes, it as also the shortest from the nominees I believe, but the outcome here is a perfect example of how quantity does not equal quality because the other four are inferior, some even drastically. Shame this one probably never really had a chance to take home the prize. But that does not make it worse or anything. When and after watching, I still thought it was merely good, but after thinking a bit about it, I'd say it is even great and one of the finest short movies from its year and also deserving of the Oscar win. This partially has to do with lead actress Veerle Baetens here, who plays an emergency phone hotline operator. I already thought she was amazing on "The Broken Cicle Breakdown" wow... can't believe this one is already almost a decade old. so I recognized her immediately. This film reminded me of a Danish film from not too long ago that was also fairly close to being nominated for an Oscar, but that was a full feature film, so there were plot twwists and everything. This one here is just very focused and essential story-telling that almost feels a bit like a documentary from a police investigation. Fittingly, I read an article not too long ago about a case where a woman called such a hotline to report a case of domestic violence I think and that she (or somebody close to her) is in danger, but she could not speak freely, so she disguised her call as if she was calling to order a pizza. The hotline operator understood and realized it is not a prank and managed to help her to become hero of the day.

The masterful use of camera combined with a powerful script and performances demonstrate all the essential qualities this cinematic medium has to offer. Delphine Girard's film couldn't be more timely and is one that will stay with its audience long after the final credits roll.

After being spoiled by the extravagant riches of awards season, a brief, packed period overflowing with high-quality films crafted with care and precision, we’re then given malformed byproducts, perhaps promising on paper but quite often punishing on screen. Previous years have offered the Matthew McConaughey stinker Serenity, the masochistically unfunny spoof Fifty Shades of Black and, just last week, an entirely unnecessary redo of The Grudge. Filmed three years ago and finally being unleashed on audiences with minimal fanfare, the Alien-aping sci-fi thriller Underwater is the most frustrating kind of January movie: one that’s almost, kind of, nearly, worth seeing. It’s a good movie that got soggy, turning it into an average one instead, a script with blurred pages, ink seeping into one big murky splurge. The setup is simple, and loosely familiar to genre fans. A crew of aquatic researchers are left in disarray when an earthquake destroys most of their facility. They’re unsure what caused it but there are concerns that the drilling team they work alongside has found something that should have been left buried. You know the deal. For a while, Underwater’s brisk goofiness is, if anything, a refreshing palate cleanser after the more serious-minded offerings of late. There’s an impressively ominous scene-setter as we glide all the way down, accompanied by an unsettlingly sinister score, and once we’re we’re onboard, we’re thrown straight into the action as our heroine, played by Kristen Stewart, fights to survive a tense sequence of destruction. It continues to move along at a fair lick and while for the most part, it recalls better, smarter examples of the genre, the bare minimum is done well enough. But as the last act comes into view, so does a creeping realisation that, er, that’s all there is because when the formula does allow space for innovation, the script from Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad sticks a bit too closely to well-recycled beats, originated in Alien and never far from our screens since. When the crew members inevitably start getting picked off, their death scenes, because of the film’s mass-audience-pleasing PG-13 rating, are largely incoherent. At one point a character has to remind someone, and us, that a death actually did just occur. It’s of course entirely possible to construct a film such as this with a lower rating in mind, but the script’s insistence on including theoretically gory moments suggests that a neutering has taken place and sloppy studio tampering has left the movie hopelessly defanged. The three years that it has taken for the film to reach us has aged it in a number of ways but most notably in the decision to cast TJ Miller as comedy support, a tiresome jester who has since been mercifully pushed aside by the industry. He’s especially grating here, spewing unfunny quips to a cast of actors who find it hard to suppress their fatigue. Kristen Stewart in Underwater. Photograph: Alan Markfield It has not been a great time for Stewart of late, an actor who had managed, quite brilliantly, to escape the shadow of the Twilight franchise to become an intriguingly unknowable arthouse darling. But her excursions back into the mainstream continue to be ill-advised, and while she tried her best to bring life to Elizabeth Banks’s shoddy Charlie’s Angels script, the film proved to be one of 2019’s biggest flops. She’s decent enough here in a role that mostly requires her to recite technical jargon and fix things while in her underwear, a directorial decision employed so often that it starts to border on creepy. Her character also conforms to the sci-fi rule that dictates that a female lead must also be grieving, but while it added pathos to both Gravity and Arrival, it feels tacked-on here, and a late stage attempt to add emotional resonance sinks fast. What frustrates me most about Underwater is just how very little it brings to the table. It’s a solid, competently directed regurgitation of an oft-told tale that never manages to justify its own existence. With a budget of around $80m, that’s really not good enough. As I entered the screening I was handed a scrap of paper that implored me not to reveal any of the film’s “surprises and plot twists” and as I left, I was scratching my head trying to figure out what on earth those were supposed to be. The only surprise here is why film-makers are still trying to remake Alien rather than trying to make something new. Underwater is out in the US on 10 January and in the UK on 31 January.

Has no one in this movie seen ‘Alien? ’” Maybe, maybe not, but it doesn’t matter, as the thing doesn’t get to do much in that moment. Welcome to the world of “Underwater, ” a movie whose own sea legs are so wobbly, you’re never quite sure whether that weak fake-out was even deliberate. Directed by William Eubank from a script by Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad, it tries to establish some “Alien”-of-the-deep bona fides with its lead, Kristen Stewart, being lean, taciturn and intense in the opening scene. Stewart may well be as consequential a screen actress as Sigourney Weaver, but dreck like this isn’t going to build a comparable filmography. The crew member who finds the gnarly thing is played by T. J. Miller. The film wrapped before his brush with the law. While this may have contributed to the movie’s long shelving, Miller’s hardly the only problem here. It’s a challenge to keep action coherent and build suspense in the submerged environment simulated in “Underwater, ” but Eubank doesn’t meet it, instead falling back on stale shocks that are not credibly buttressed by swelling bass effects on the soundtrack. Have you ever watched Alice on the Wall? If not, I really recommend it. It’s this version of the movie syncd with Pink Floyd’s The Wall (minus Comfortably Numb). My first time dropping acid it was recommended to me as something to focus on that was super trippy but helped you focus on something to kind of soothe you over. It was an insanely incredible experience. I think it’s good not on drugs also, but man it’s crazy just how well everything works together. This scene in particular was probably the first thing that tore through me. Going into it I assumed it would be super gimmicky but by the end I was crying lol.

I even loved how some of the real characters were actually in the film as well. Good cinematography. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 was because it was slow in some parts. Overall, a must see that hopefully changes your life.

I'm a sucker for a good ol' little-man-against-the-system movie (think "Erin Brockovich" and "Silkwood. of which "Dark Waters" is the latest example. I was mostly intrigued to see what Todd Haynes would do with the formula, since he's explored such a unique creative touch in films I've adored ( Safe. Far from Heaven" and films I've felt more lukewarmly about ( Carol. I'm Not There. Surprisingly, he charges straight down the line with "Dark Waters." This is an interesting if not engrossing film, and it feels like it could be directed by anybody.
That's not necessarily a bad thing when you have an actor as good as Mark Ruffalo in the lead, because the movie gets out of his way and lets him do his thing. He gives a restrained, compelling performance and resists the urge to overplay the everyman-as-hero aspects of this story. This film is more "Silkwood" than "Erin Brockovich." As much fun as it was to watch Julia Roberts tearing around the screen giving everyone a what-for, she wasn't once believable as a working class broad. Ruffalo, on the other hand, IS believable as a modest attorney in Rust Belt America, and he builds a full performance out of subtle, quiet moments rather than any big, showy, Oscar clip ones. This is basically a one-man show, though he's given able support by Tim Robbins, who's worth the price of admission for the scene where he hands a young cocky attorney his ass, and Bill Pullman, gruff and hilarious and using an accent from God knows where. I was attracted to the film partly because I had heard it was funny, but it isn't (although there is a little bit of wry/cynical humor. Take a hike La Gomera is an undisputed hikers paradise. From deep ravines to scraggy hilltops and breathtaking views, there is no shortage of trails to conquer on your trip. The volcanic landscape of dark rocks and black sand beaches give it an otherworldly feel – you half expect to see a dinosaur peering out from over the hilltop! Nowhere is very far away, so all you need to do is start. Places to visit include Los Rocos, Garajonay National Park (see below) and the highest peak of the island Alto de Garajonay, at 1, 487 metres high. Visit the black sand beaches Due to the volcanic soil, the beaches on La Gomera have black sand and some are quite pebbly. There can be strong currents and irregular waves you need to be aware of on the islands beaches. Head to Playa Santiago in the south for fantastic sunsets, and Valle Gran Rey in the west for a totally unspoiled setting. Hermigua Beach is another worth visiting, though the currents can be rough, its known for its particularly temperate climate, lovely seawater pool and beautiful backdrop. Taste La Gomera wine Rich volcanic soil and abundant sunshine means conditions on the Canary Islands are very suited to winemaking. La Gomera produces mostly white wines, with 80% of the total number of vines being white Foraster or Forastera Gomera which is exclusive to the island. The Canaries avoided the fateful plague phylloxera that killed off the vines in mainland Europe in the early 19th century, so the wines youll taste are developed from 500-year-old vines rather than 150-year-old vines like in Europe. Ascend Hasta La Vista If you are heading in the direction of Hermigua by car, you should make a detour to the Mirador de Abrante. Perched on the northern cliff of the island, the mirador has a boxed-in glass walkway that juts out seven metres into thin air. The view is fantastic and on a clear day you can see the houses and terraces in the village of Agulo, 400 metres below, and beyond out to sea you can even make out Tenerife. Those with a fear of heights, though, should probably wait in the car. Get to know Christopher Colombus In the capital of San Sebastian you will find many streets, houses, shops and restaurants dedicated to the explorer Christopher Colombus who stopped over here before he went West in search of India and ended up landing in the Americas. La Gomeras second name is La Isla Columbiana because of this history, and locals recite the story that the great land of America was consecrated with the water from the wells of San Sebastian. And you can still visit Casa Condal, the customs house in which there is a well that Colombus was believed to have taken water from. Get back to nature For budding botanists a visit to the laurel forest of Garajonay National Park in the centre of the island is a must. It is home to numerous plant species that are largely under threat of extinction. The forest is shrouded mostly in mist and cloud, and an example of an ancient type of rainforest that thrives in warm temperatures and used to exist in Europe and North Africa; now (due to climate evolution) they are only found in the Azores, Madeira and the Canaries. Watch a Shepherd Leap If you see a group of men and women, most likely up a scraggy mountain, carrying long wooden sticks (astias) they are likely practising the sport of the shepherds leap. The Salto del Pastor or Brinco Canario is common on a number of Canary Islands. It was a means for shepherds to keep up with their nimble flock or herd as they roamed the mountains and ravines. You plant the wooden stick and with a push, hurl yourself forward, hopefully to your next landing spot. Rock out with island geology La Gomera is a geologists paradise, and one of the islands most impressive landmarks is Los Organos. Located in the north of the island, it stands 200 metres tall and 80 metres wide, although its true height is 800 metres with most of it hidden underwater. The structure of the rock was formed by the slow cooling of basalt magma which formed the pipe-like rocks. The result is that the rock is the shape of musical pipes, lined side by side like an enormous church organ. As they are on a cliff face, on the northern rocky shore, you can only see them from the sea. Two-hour tours head out from Valle Gran Rey.
